A Carbon Monoxide
Molecule
|
Carbon Monoxide is a colorless and odorless
gas that may be released as a result of burner malfunction, improper
maintenance, blocked or leaky flues, or poor ventilation. The buildup of
carbon monoxide (CO) can also arise when the homeowner deliberately
obstructs the ventilation or flue to prevent drafts.
As an invisible danger, CO can kill. During 2001-2003, an estimated 15,200
persons were treated annually in emergency rooms for nonfatal,
unintentional, non-fire-related CO exposure, and, during 2001-2002, an
average of 480 persons died each year from unintentional, non-fire-related
CO exposure. (Source: Center for Disease Control.)
Know the Symptoms of CO Poisoning:
Initial symptoms are similar to the flu (but without fever) and include:
headache, fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea, and dizziness. Impaired
vision and coordination, and confusion may also occur.
Protect Yourself from CO Poisoning!
If you think you are experiencing CO poisoning, get fresh air immediately.
Open windows and doors for more ventilation, turn off any combustion
appliances, and leave your home. Then call your fire department and report
your symptoms. Seek prompt medical attention.

such as mowers, chain saws, small engines or generators in enclosed
spaces.

lint-free.
|
And Most
Importantly ... Get a Carbon Monoxide Detector
 | Be safe by having a battery-operated
carbon monoxide detector installed. It's just as important as a smoke
detector. Test your CO detector at least once a month and replace
batteries frequently.
